Pictures from the past Indian Summer

Wednesday, November 1, 2017

Summer is a distant memory already... But here in Southern France autumn means what we call "Indian Summer", a sort of late heat wave that carries us gently to the colder season.

The best moment of the year - When you thought summer was over and fall just around the corner, you realize you can still enjoy the perfect weather and the best waves without the crowds of summer tourists...

These moments are pure joy. The locals pour out of their offices on to the beach for a more intimate late summer sunbath.

In the last couple of months I had the chance to be one of these locals.
Today I want to share with you the captures I took from one of these Indian Summer days. I love these kind of spontaneous shots. I hadn't previewed them at all, but the moment was too beautiful not to be captured and shared. I hope you enjoy the images and the lights as much as I do.

A day at the beach with Zephyr Image + itw

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

Hello there!
Recently the weather and the waves have been so good here in South-Western France - a little European corner of paradise for the surfing addicted like me :)

A few weeks ago I had the chance to model for a photoshoot with the beautiful Cece from Zephyr Image, a two photographers' company based in Hawaii. They are a couple in business and couple in life!
It was super fun and interesting to spend the morning with Cece and chat about life in Hawaii and future goals and plans.

I wanted to know more about this couple who travels the world and turned their passion into their full-time job. This is another example of self-made entrepreneurs who rock it!

Have a read at their interview and at (some of) the pictures of the photoshoot in Biarritz.

1. Where do you draw inspiration from when it comes to your work and photography style?

Our combined passion for art, culture, travel, along with the slow paced and down to earth lifestyle of the Hawaiian islands inspire us. They inspire us to create simple and timeless images that unravel the global trends with intent and meaning. As an artist, I’d say your work changes depending on what is influencing you to create whether it be an emotion or something happening in life.

Because we create more of a versatile range of media we try to use life as our biggest inspiration. When it comes to travel, lifestyle, and love photography, we gain inspiration from the people we photograph with the intent of telling their story.

When it comes to editorial we are constantly trying to create with simplicity, and focus on our subject to create meaning. We also gain inspiration from so many other talented artists out there.

Good Reads that inspire us : Kinfolk. Cereal. Herewith.
Other Talented Artists : Woody Gooch @woodygphoto | Beth Kirby @local_milk | Amber Mozo @ambermozo | Samantha Feyen @samanthaeeyo | Ming Nomchong @ming_nomchong_photo | Mason Rose @masonrosephoto | Kal Reston @kal_reston | and more <3

2. What is it like to be partners in work and partners in life?

Simply put, we love it. We come across this question all of the time and it really stumps some people that we eat, breathe, sleep, edit, shoot, surf, and live next to each other ALL of the time haha. It’s definitely not easy, just like I wouldn’t necessarily say marriage is easy. You’re taking two individuals with two different upbringings, personality types, and communication styles and combining it into one life. But like anything it takes effort, patience, humility, respect, and all of the qualities included in being a teammate. But with all of that said, we absolutely love it. We’re best friends and we’ve been inseparable since we were 14 years old.

We haven’t always worked together so we definitely know what each side of the scope is like. Our biggest appreciation for having the opportunity to do what we love together is the fact that we experience almost everything involved in our life together.

Things we’ve learned :

- Find a hobby or activity to do together outside of work. This brings more casual care-free connection into the marriage with out everything feeling so “serious”.
- As important as it is to find a hobby together, find one individually as well. We all need our individual outlets that reset us, refresh us, and tap into that creativity. We encourage personal projects and hobbies.
- Retire to bed and wake up together.
- Put the gadgets down. Slow down. And try to develop the mindset of “slowly working” verses adopting the typical “fast paced” work environment. This allows us to collaborate and stay inspired. When you reach a burn out you can become stressed, take it out on the other partner, and end up wasting more time then accomplishing work.
- When you need to discuss important subjects, make sure you are both well fed and well rested.
- Choose your battles.
- Say I love you often
- Never stop dating. Go on dates weekly.
- Find ways to spend “quality” time together amongst daily activities. For example, prepare and eat meals together with no electronic interruptions. Run errands together and use that opportunity to “catch up” and talk whenever possible.

3. What is the best part of your job?

Outside of working together, it feels good to be able to do our passion for work. We have so many beautiful relationships and connections that have come into light as well. Meeting other artists, entrepreneurs, couples, and connecting with them is simply amazing. The flexibility of running our business from anywhere is amazing. And also all of the travel opportunities it sets out for us is more than what we could ask for.

4. A word of advice to all of the aspiring photographers out there?

Do you. Create the content that makes you happy. Always remember why you fell in love with photography in the first place. And choose to learn from and grow from other photographers verses competing. Community over competition as they say. Realize that we are all in it together and theres room for everyone up at the top. Having something so huge in common, a common passion should unite you. Never stop learning. And if you are doing a specific type of photography that is starting to feel like “work”, its starting to steal the joy from your passion then switch it up. Get rid of it. Always, always remain inspired and do what you love. It will shine through in your work.

Winter day at the beach

Wednesday, February 22, 2017

A few months ago my friends at Comptoir Des Cotonniers and Princesse Tam Tam spoilt me with some pieces of their new winter collection. As you can see, I'm all for basics and comfort and couldn't be more excited to be wearing such high quality clothing that would suit my everyday style as well.

I asked my friend Filippa Edghill to take some pictures at the collection and I thought of sharing them with you today.
It was a lovely sunny winter day. The beach was deserted and the landscape around us stunning. The perfect location for an adventurer's photoshooting.

The best surf books to read this winter

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

When it's so cold outside and surfing or simply have a walk by the beach is not possible, one of my favorite activities is snuggle on the couch and relax with a good reading.

Winter is the perfect time for cozy afternoons under the blanket or in front of the fireplace, with a cup of hot chocolate and your favorite book in a hand, don't you think?

I am a huge fan of fiction and easy-to-read books that are meant to relax and make you escape from your ordinary life. Add some surfing to this and I'm sold!
Today I'm sharing with you my favorite surf-fiction books that you can't do without during these long rainy winter afternoons.

So, put some warm socks on and choose yours!

Healthy habits // Energy-booster recipes for a great start to the year

Monday, January 16, 2017

Hello there,
It’s Blandine over from Food Moods. I was delighted when Marta contacted me to ask if I’d like to guest post again on Surfragette.

First and foremost, I wish you all a happy, abundant and joyful New Year!

After the holiday season, January is the perfect time to take on new healthy habits, look after yourself and get into shape for the surf season ahead.
To boost your immune system for winter, make sure you get enough sleep, exposure to sun light, gentle exercise (walking, swimming and yoga are all good), and the right type of food for this time of year. A sufficient intake of vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables (kiwis, citrus fruits, cabbage, onions and garlic), antioxidant-rich vitamin E (found in nuts, seeds and oil), zinc (wheat germ, spinach, mushrooms) and probiotics will help you get through winter on top form.

I like the idea of making small changes everyday to lead a healthier life, so I’ve come up with two easy recipes to get you started on this journey.

How to be a green(er) surfer

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

For us surfers having a environmental friendly attitude toward life is not only a good habit or a new trend to follow, but also a real need. Every inland garbage, every chemical, every trash we see on the streets will inevitably end up in the ocean, polluting the water and becoming dangerous to our health.

Bacteria can turn into infections, sickness and other unpleasant diseases and the idea of getting my health at risk while doing what I love the most is not appealing. But no-one is saying we should give up and find something else to do. Everyone of us can make even the smallest act everyday and be the change, not only for our planet (let's think big!) and for our health, but also for our overall surf experience.

Here are some tips to become a green(er) surfer. The change doesn't need to be radical - little by little we can learn how to reduce our ecological footprint, preserve the ocean and protect the surf spots as long as possible.

Why not start the new year the best way?

After-surf hot chocolate recipe (the Italian way)

Thursday, December 29, 2016

With winter season in full swing, I can't help getting lazy when I think about those harsh winter sessions with howling wind in freezing cold water. Apart from the stoke of this cold season surf (see 12 reasons to go surfing in winter and Some things you didn't know about winter surfers), one of my favorite moments is sharing a cup of hot chocolate after the session with a few friends, reminding of the waves we just had.

From the first time I landed to France, I've been hearing people talking about hot chocolate as a national pride. I never hid my disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it is delicious indeed, but as proud Italian I've always preferred the Italian version, thicker and way more chocolatey...

Today I'd like to share with you the recipe of the real Italian hot chocolate, to get the atmosphere cozy this winter season.

Pink sunset session by Bubblerock

Friday, October 14, 2016
Last August I had the chance to meet two amazing people from New Zealand. Steph and Robin are a beautiful couple of photographers and the proud owners of Bubblerock. Couple in business, couple in life!

I have been lucky enough to spend the whole day with them here in South-West of France. They really are wonderful people and I'm so happy I got to know them! We did two amazing photoshootings together, one during the day with my lovely Filippa Edghill and one during the evening with my beautiful friend Sirikit Harivongs. But I'll show you the pics later on another post ;)

At sunset the light became so magical and we decided to snap a few surf shots. The pink atmosphere all around us created such a soft vibe inside and outside the water. My words can't describe it better than the photos will do.
Sunset is my very favorite moment of the day and that day was definitely one of the best sunset sessions so far.

Enjoy the pictures of the talented Steph and Robin from Bubblerock.

Sundaze // A summer day at Côte des Basques

Wednesday, August 17, 2016

It’s unbelievable how fast everything can change. In a matter of just a few months a quiet, mystical place can turn into a holiday fever attraction. The silence makes room to the laughter and noise of the chatting tourists crowds.

The “sport of kings” gets democratized and the lineup fills up with colorful rush vests and surfboards.

It’s ok, we knew it. We get up earlier and try to find our little corner of peace at the lights of dawn. When the day blooms it all starts again.

Morning lights // Photoshooting with Mathieu Hemon

Friday, August 5, 2016

A few weeks ago I had the chance to spend some hours with the talented photographer Mathieu Hemon. We met early in the morning, the sun already shining, to take advantage of a softer light and desert spot.

It announced a beautiful summer day and even if the water was still chilly, we didn't mind starting our day off in the ocean, surrounded by the silence of a beautiful coastal environment.
